Lake of Tears

by Seidana Akunova

Oil and aerosol on handmade rice paper | 76 × 55 cm | 2025

Long ago, a wealthy city stood where Lake Issyk-Kul lies today. It was ruled by a cruel khan who sought to forcibly marry a beautiful girl from a poor family. She loved another, and her heart remained faithful. When the khan's warriors surrounded her, she threw herself into the abyss rather than surrender. The earth shook, water surged from the depths, and the city was swallowed whole. This is how Lake Issyk-Kul, translated as Hot Lake, was born. Its waters are said to be salty from her tears, and warm because her heart still burns with love and anger.

This is a story about deep feelings never brought to the surface. The legend is a metaphor for how a Kyrgyz woman endures hardship: Issyk-Kul is beautiful, but its depths always hold a sadness. A strong woman's resilience is admired, yet only she knows the price of her quiet surface.
